Clarity without collective support is the capacity to see and to judge by the permanent measure when no surrounding order confirms the judgment. A traditional world carried part of that clarity in a shared language of rank, quality, and higher knowledge. The language has largely dissolved. The differentiated man keeps the distinctions anyway, and he answers for them without a chorus. Without that force he is carried by whatever the hour has decided to call equal.
The age multiplies perspectives until a firm line looks like an offense. Chatter treats every distinction as a preference and invites him to soften the sentence so the room can stay intact. A role pays more when he will stop naming what is higher and what is lower. Hunger to be seen rewards the man who holds three readings at once. A man who will not discriminate has already entered the current.
Young men often feel that judgment itself has become impossible, because the collective no longer supplies the categories that once made it natural. The absence of the categories does not erase the difference between a high act and a low one. Softness will call the continued discrimination arrogance and offer belonging in exchange for a blur. The blur is the surrender. Clarity remains an interior achievement, and it costs more here than it did under a living tradition.
Judge the next thing in front of you, and leave the judgment standing when no one seconds it. Name the higher and the lower in the work, and refuse the phrase that exists only to blur the line. Decline the role whose price is the right to stop discriminating. Keep one hour free of chatter. The man who can do these things while no order confirms him is still seeing by the measure.
