Day 187 — Residual Virility

"Virility in the residual sense is the capacity to remain oriented and capable of decision under conditions that systematically undermine both orientation and decision." — Julius Evola, Ride the Tiger

Virility here is the capacity to stay oriented and to decide when the conditions work against both. Traditional virility had a world behind it: rank, risk, a public measure of action that named what a man was for. That world has withdrawn. The differentiated man keeps orientation and decision in himself, and he does not wait for the age to restore the supports. The firmness is quiet, proved in the next choice rather than in display.

The age sells counterfeits that wear the same name. Aggression performed for an audience, a public refusal of softness, a role that pays in the look of force: each can be worn without a center. Chatter will praise the performance and call it masculine. The firmness required does not announce itself. It keeps the measure in place when indecision would have been better rewarded.

Young men meet the pressure as an invitation to drop the decision. A circle offers belonging if he will let the room choose. Softness calls a firm line harsh and proposes a delay that looks like balance. A job that rewards only output trains him to treat orientation as a private hobby and output as the real act. Hunger to be seen pushes the counterfeit, because the counterfeit can be collected and the stance cannot.

Decide the next contested thing before the room decides it for you. Keep the body under the hour already set when softness offers a later start. Speak the true sentence once, and leave it standing when chatter wants a harder performance of the same line. Refuse the role whose price is the right to call noise virility. The man who can hold orientation and decision under these invitations is living the masculine force the age no longer supplies.
