Quality under dissolution is the higher form kept after the conditions that once favored it have gone. A traditional order gave quality a public place: rank, craft, a limit on what could pass as enough. Those conditions have dissolved. Quantity now sets the score, and more output is treated as a better act. The differentiated man keeps the older distinction: a thing can be finished and still be low.
The age pays for volume, and a job that rewards only output will call the careful act a delay. Chatter multiplies words until speech has no weight. A circle praises the man who produces on command and treats the man who refuses a cheap piece as difficult. Each pressure asks him to trade the form of the act for the count of the act. The trade is how quality leaves a life without an announcement.
Young men are taught that quality is a luxury the present conditions no longer allow. The teaching arrives as practical advice: ship the thing, match the room, save the harder standard for a later hour that never comes. Softness agrees, and calls the agreement balance. The higher form does not wait for favorable conditions to return. It is realized in the act that still answers to a measure the count cannot see.
Do the next piece to the standard, and stop when the standard is met. Refuse the extra word that exists only to be seen. Leave the cheap version unsent when the job would have paid for it. Keep one hour in the day that quantity is not allowed to score. The man who can do these things while the surrounding world counts only output is still living by the higher form.
