Day 183 — The Interior Pole

"When the external pole has disappeared, the differentiated individual must establish the pole within. That establishment is the residual form of the axis." — Julius Evola, Ride the Tiger

The interior pole is the fixed point a man establishes in himself once the external pole has disappeared. A traditional order held that point in public: sacred authority, rank, a center the periphery could orient by. The center no longer stands where he can see it. The differentiated man sets the axis inside, and he returns to it when the surrounding field has no north. Without that return, every offer becomes a pole.

A group, a role with a name attached, a feed that tells him what the hour requires: each presents itself as the point everything else should face. They are horizontal, and they move. The man who faces them has handed his orientation to the current. The interior pole stays put. Work, speech, and company can turn around it, or they can be refused.

Young men feel the missing pole as a restlessness that looks for a center in other men. The friendship with no aim beyond proximity, the job that rewards only output, the hunger to be seen: each invites him to borrow a pole for the week. Borrowing is the surrender. A direction that depends on the room will turn when the room turns. The axis he establishes has to hold while no one else is facing it.

Set the pole before the next offer arrives to set it for you. Name the standard that will govern the week, and keep one act answerable to it alone. Rise at the hour already set when no one is scoring the rise. Refuse the role whose gift is a center made of other men's approval. The man who can hold that point under a vanished public axis is already oriented from within.
