When external rank disappears, the only rank that remains is the one a man maintains inside himself according to the permanent measure. A traditional order made rank visible in function, office, and the distance between higher and lower ways of being. Those structures have been dissolved. The dissolution is not evidence that rank has ceased. Rank remains as the interior ordering of a life: what governs, what serves, what is refused the right to set the direction.
The age works to erase the distinction. Equality as leveling arrives in ordinary speech, where every difference is talked down into taste and every standard is treated as a personal preference. The differentiated man keeps the cut: quality above quantity, firmness above softness, a center above the current that pulls away from it. The maintenance of those distinctions is the late form of the older hierarchical order. Without that maintenance the life is already leveled, whatever title the room still hands out.
Young men are trained to hear any interior hierarchy as arrogance. A job that rewards only output will offer a substitute rank: volume, speed, the number that can be shown. A feed will offer another: visibility, the hunger to be seen treated as proof of place. Both rankings belong to the age. Taking them because the room has no other ladder is how a man levels himself while calling it humility.
Order the next day by the measure, before the job or the feed supplies a ranking. Put the body under command ahead of comfort, and speech under measure ahead of chatter. Put one refusal ahead of the approval that would have settled the choice. A public hierarchy would make the order easier to read. The work is to keep higher and lower distinct inside the life you actually have.
