The higher type under late conditions must learn to live without the world mirroring his orientation back to him. In a traditional order, rank, function, and sacred authority supplied a continuous examination. A man of quality saw his measure reflected in the structures around him. Those structures have largely withdrawn. The examination is now interior, or it does not occur.
The silence of the surrounding world is the normal climate of the age. It is easy to read that silence as proof that the measure itself has failed. The reading is false. The measure stands whether or not a crowd can still recognize it. What has failed is the public apparatus that once translated the measure into offices, rites, and visible hierarchy. Confusing the two is how a man talks himself into lowering the line.
Young men are trained to treat recognition as evidence of reality. If no one sees the standard, the standard begins to feel invented. The hunger to be seen then becomes the leak. He looks for a scene, a group, a feed, a role that will tell him he is still on the path. Most of those mirrors belong to the age. They confirm a performance. They do not confirm a type.
Live without that mirror. The confirmation that still counts is the one he gives by keeping the standard when nothing around him returns it. Silence from the world is not a verdict on the measure. It is the condition under which the measure has to be held. The man who continues to stand by it has already taken the position the cycle still leaves open.
